Corfu is the closest and cheapest destination in Greece. Interesting, beautiful island is on the west coast of Greece.
Short description
Its name derives from Greek mythology. Corfu is located in the Ionic Sea and is the most northern island in Greece. The island is largely mountainous. On the island are many interesting beaches. The old town of Corfu town is under UNESCO protection.
A little history of Corfu
Corfu was inhabited in the Bronze Age. 734 B.K, Corinthians occupied the island, and they built the city Analipsi and acropolis. Slowly it became an important commercial center of Corfu. They became so strong that they resist Corinthians, and became independent. After the war between Sparta and Athens and the victory of Sparta, Corfu came under Sparta administration. Later, they were occupied by Syracuse, until they came under Roman administration. Under Byzantine they started building a new consolidated city that can resist attack of Normans. In 1204 the Venetians occupied the island, which remained until 1797. Then, the French occupied the island, which after two harvests defeat the Russians. But the French were willing to waive Corfu and the island occupied again for the period 1807 to 1815, when the island for half a century occupied the British. Then join the island to Greece.
